The Poem By Taylor Mali that we talked about in class

Hey I figured that actually posting the poem on my blog would be slightly inappropriate so here is a link that goes to the poem.

Hunger Artist and Hunger

After having read "A Hunger Artist" I was really surprised by the actions of Kafka, it honestly seems like a crazt persons job, starving ones self. Having discussed this in class I now see that connection between the Hunger Artists dislike of food to the protagonist in "Hunger." In "A Hunger Artist" he can't find a food that tastes good to him after having starved himself, in "Hunger" this is seen because the protagonist cannot keep anyfood down because he is so malnourished.

In "A Hunger Artist" I found that his need for attention drove him to starvation, this need for attention is seen in "Hunger" as well, because of the protagonist belief that other famous people that he speaks about have got it all wrong that his ideas blow them out of the water. There is also the simliarity that after awhile people lose interest in the starving man ("A Hunger Artist") and he believes that they just don't understand, in "Hunger" this is seen through some of his encounters with his editor, who tells him to simplify it so that normal people can understand his ideas.

I also found it very interesting that the Hunger Artist seemed to be doing it for no purpose, this I found interesting because the idea of starving yourself for self benefit seems to be a little backwards.

Plan

1. Read and Annotate Book
-Reread and annotate again (looking at/for patterns in my annotations)

2.Go over patterns in my annotations
-start to connect said patterns to literary features

3. With literary features choose which to focus on.
- look through annotations to make sure that there is substantial evidence and material to write about chosen literary feature.

4. Flip through annotations to figure out main ideas for essay.
-synthesize into large ideas to make into thesis.

5. With (draft)thesis begin to out line essay
- while going through this part make sure that there are usable quotes for ideas/ statements.

6. With outline begin to insert the quotes in appropriate places in outline
- outline should be pretty extensive and detailed now.

7. Now that the idea of the essay is formed revise thesis as it is probably not as correct as it once was.
- make sure that topic sentences now fit with new topic sentences and idea now connected directly.

8. Begin writing essay (from second paragraph, not introduction)
-this is really just making the outline flow a little more like an essay.

9.From this outline/essay begin to review and make flow better in the paragraphs.
- then from paragraph to paragraph.

10. Now that the body paragraphs sound more essay like work on introduction and conclusion.

11.Make sure that introduction connects to essay topic sentences.

12. Read aloud for grammatical errors
- try leaving essay alone for awhile and come back to it after forgetting exact word to the essay.
-Review for flow.

13.Format

14.Review to make sure formatting did not mess anything up
- Review again for grammatical problems.
