Heidi and Street car

There are many similarities between A Street Car Named Desire and Heidi Chronicles. One of these similarities is through the setting. In both A Street Car Named Desire and Heidi Chronicles the time period in which they are set is very important to understanding the play. If we did not know that Heidi Chronicles was during a feminist movement that created a lot of change we would not have full understood the significance of Heidi's decisions or those of the friends. While Blanche's beliefs are emphasized by the change it time period as her ideas appear to be outdated and stuck in the past.
While there is quite a difference in the settings of the two plays the locations do have some similarities. Both of the settings in the play tend to reflect or emphasize the main character. In A Street Car Named Desire the setting changes when Blanche is being haunted by her past while Heidi's changes when there is a different relationship with the other characters.

  1. Nice blogpost! Firstly, what do you mean when you say "the setting changes when Blanche is being haunted by her past"? Do you mean when she goes to the hotel flamingo, or when she goes to Stella's house, or something entirely different? One major difference between Blanche and Heidi is that Blanche is stuck in her past and Heidi is trying to move forward. Heidi ends up making her life complete by adopting a baby; however, Blanche just continues to lie her way through life until she hits rock bottom. Furthermore, music is used to tell how Blanche is feeling and art is used by Heidi. You see Blanches reaction and you hear how Heidi explains the art piece. The setting changes much more frequently in Heidi than in Streetcar. I think this is one way Heidi is trying to find who she is and where she belongs. Blanche only changes where she lives to run away from her past so she can continue to live as if she were young. Moreover, Heidi is concerned that she is getting older and hasn't met a man or had a kid, Blanche is concerned about getting older because then she may not get a man and she is very self-conscious about her looks.
